Group Swim Lessons - Levels 1-5        

 

Ages 6-17 Years

Come make a splash in Huskies Group Swim Lessons! American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-5 are being offered at the SDC Pool.

Space will be provided for personal items on the pool deck. Goggles are highly recommended. Showering is required before entering the water. Class size is limited.

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills

Description: The purpose of this level is to orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills while developing positive attitudes and safe practices around water.

Learning Objectives:

  • Techniques for entering and exiting the water
  • Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
  • Bobbing
  • Retrieve submerged objects
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Body control and manipulation in the water
  • Tread water using arm and hand actions
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg and arm actions on front and back
  • Learn water safety skills

No previous swimming lesson skills or history are needed to participate in this level.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Description: Participants build upon the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1.

Learning Objectives:

  • Techniques for entering and exiting the water
  • Fully submerge and hold breath
  • Bobbing
  • Retrieve submerged objects
  • Front, jellyfish, and tuck floats
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Body control and manipulation in the water
  • Tread water using arm and leg actions
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Finning arm action
  • Learn water safety skills

Participants are ready for this level if they have completed the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 1 OR can successfully complete all certification requirements from Level 1 including:

  • Enter the water independently using the ramp, steps, or side.
  • Have the ability to travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times, and safely exit the water.
  • Be able to glide on their front for at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a vertical position (with assistance). 

Level 3 - Stroke Development

Description: Participants build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 and achieve basic water competency in a pool environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Techniques for entering and exiting the water
  • Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions
  • Bobbing while moving toward safety
  • Rotary breathing
  • Survival float and back float
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back
  • Tread water
  • Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front
  • Front crawl and elementary backstroke
  • Learn water safety skills

Participants are ready for this level if they have completed the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 2 OR can successfully complete all certification requirements from Level 2 including:

  • Step from the side into chest-deep water, push off the bottom, move into a treading or floating position for at least 15 seconds, swim on their front and/or back for 5 body lengths, then exit the water.
  • Move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then recover to a vertical position.
  • Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front, then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.
  • Independent confidence and control in the water. 

Level 4 - Stroke Improvement

Description: The purpose of this level is to improve participants' proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 3.

Learning Objectives:

  • Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions
  • Swim underwater
  • Feet first surface dive
  • Survival swimming
  • Front crawl and backstroke open turns
  • Tread water using 2 different kicks
  • Swim front crawl and elementary backstroke for 25 yards
  • Swim butterfly, back crawl, and sidestroke for 15 yards
  • Flutter and dolphin kicks on back
  • Learn water safety skills

Participants are ready for this level if they have completed the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 3 OR can successfully complete all certification requirements from Level 3 including:

  • Jump into deep water from the side, recover to the surface, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 minute, rotate one full turn then turn as necessary to orient to the exit point, level off, swim front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yards, then exit the water.
  • Push off in a streamlined position then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards, then exit the water. 

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement

Description: The purpose of this level is to further learn how to coordinate and refine strokes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Shallow-angle dives into deep water
  • Tuck and pike surface dives
  • Flip turns
  • Tread water for 5 minutes
  • Sculling for 30 seconds
  • Swim front crawl, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke for 50 yards
  • Swim butterfly, back crawl, and sidestroke for 25 yards
  • Learn water safety skills

Participants are ready for this level if they have completed the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 OR can successfully complete all certification requirements from Level 4 including:

  • Perform a feetfirst entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary, and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards.
  • Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary, and swim back crawl for 15 yards. 
  • Submerge and swim a distance of 3-5 body lengths underwater without hyperventilation, return to the surface then exit the water. 

Location

SDC Pool

The Student Development Complex lap pool and dive tank are licensed by the State of Michigan and inspected by the Western U.P. District Health Department. Accordingly, the water is analyzed and the temperature is taken daily. The new heating system keeps the water constantly between 82-83 degrees.

Special Requirements

All students must have appropriate swimwear (no cutoffs or street clothes) and a towel. Students should bring goggles. A parent or legal guardian is required to sign waiver of liability and concussion awareness forms for all youth classes.

Cost

Session $75 per participant

Registration and payment can be completed online, by phone at 906-487-2073, or at the SDC Ticket Office. A parent or legal guardian is required to sign a waiver of liability and concussion awareness forms for all youth classes.

About the Aquatics Manager

Ann Bengry, Aquatics Manager

Ann Bengry comes to Michigan Tech from Saginaw Valley State University, where she served as the Assistant Swimming and Diving coach for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. At SVSU, Annie led the sprint group and coordinated the Cardinal Aquatic Swim Lessons program. Annie attended Saint Leo University, where she served as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams from 2015-2018. While earning her Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Business, she helped assist in coaching multiple All-American student-athletes and guided several student-athletes to national qualifying performances. 

Prior to Saint Leo, Annie, a native of Marquette, MI, served as a volunteer coach for Northern Michigan University’s Women’s Swim Team while earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Science. 

A former collegiate swimmer and diver, Annie also trained for three years as an Olympic weightlifter at the US Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan University. Annie has also served as a swim coach, lifeguard, swim instructor, and aquatics assistant at the YMCA of Marquette County and the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA. She is a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor® and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor® Trainer.
