Meet the Coaches

Josh Buettner was named head men's basketball coach on April 16, 2021. In his first year at the helm, the Huskies tied for a share of the GLIAC championship and Buettner was named Coach of the Year. During the previous season as associate head coach Buettner helped the Huskies to the NCAA Midwest Region Championship game as the Huskies were a bucket away from advancing to the Elite 8. Buettner helped the Huskies to the NCAA Midwest Region Championship game in his 1st season as associate head men's basketball coach in 2020-21. The team finished 15-8 overall and 12-6 in the GLIAC North Division. Prior to his promotion to Associate Head Coach, Buettner served 13 seasons as assistant coach after taking the position July 1, 2008. He has recruited four All-Americans and numerous All-GLIAC First Team selections since his appointment in 2008. The Shawano WI native starred for the Huskies from 2001-05. He was a two-time All-American and earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors as both a junior and senior. A 6-9 forward, Buettner finished third on Tech’s all-time scoring chart with 2,061 career points. Following his graduation from Tech in 2005, Buettner played professionally in Europe for three years. He played in leagues in Denmark, Switzerland, and Iceland, and was named the Danish Elite League Player of the Year in his second pro campaign. In addition to his coaching duties, Buettner teaches classes in the kinesiology and integrated physiology department and coordinates all of Michigan Tech's boys' basketball camps, clinics, and leagues as well as the Doghouse 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

Ben Stelzer was hired as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach in June 2021 and is in his second season with the Huskies. Stelzer returned to Houghton after playing professional basketball in Spain and has also coached at several levels since his graduation from Michigan Tech in 2015. Stelzer's collegiate playing career began in 2011. He was a four-year starter and three-year captain for the Huskies. Stelzer finished as the program's all-time leader in 3-pointers (363) and shot 44-percent as a senior. He was also named NCAA Division II All-American, Academic All-American, and Midwest Region Player of the Year. Stelzer led the Huskies to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16. After college, Stelzer played in Spain for Layma Basquet Coruna and led the league in total 3-pointers made and helped his team advance to the playoff semifinals. Stelzer worked as assistant coach of the Huskies in 2016-17 under then Head Coach Kevin Luke and Coach Buettner. He led and assisted workouts, broke down game film and scouting reports, and helped with recruiting. Stelzer ran clinics with small groups for youth, high school, and college level players from 2017-19 as a skill development coach. He gained experience as Director of Player Development for Wisconsin Playground Warriors AAU Club. He was on the men's basketball staff at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach during their 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship run. The team finished 29-3 overall and defeated Swarthmore College in the final. Since 2019, Stelzer has held the position of Player Development Intern with the Dallas Mavericks as well as Solid Base Skills and Drills website developer and owner, which provides remote player development training for players and teams from youth ages to college.
