Camp Overview

See the Daily Schedule for the camp's full itinerary details.

Camp runs Sunday - Friday

Our Group 3 camp stresses both individual and team skills, including the role of the forward and defenseman in breakout patterns, neutral-zone techniques, offensive-zone alignments, playing position, and team play. Open to boys and girls birth years 2008 - 2010 with at least one year of organized hockey experience. Participants will need their own water bottles and snacks daily, as well as a small bag to carry them in.

Participants learn and practice under personalized direction from Michigan Tech's staff, as well as current varsity players, alumni, and guest instructors.

Programs are built around Daily On-Ice Instruction, focusing on power-skating, shooting, passing, positional playing, small area games, competitive battle drills, angling, and defensive play. Off-Ice Programming includes hockey skills, age-appropriate competitive games, and lecture. Full hockey equipment and athletic apparel/shoes are required.

Group 3 will be divided into (1) black team and (1) gold team prior to the first day of camp. Both teams stay together for the duration of the week.

  • Locker rooms will be assigned for equipment storage for the duration of camp. Please label all personal belongings.
  • Counselors are assigned to each group and remain with campers throughout the day, including meals. Lead and assistant instructors are present for all on and off-ice activities.
  • The Outdoor Adventure Program partners with Michigan Tech to introduce team building activities to the participants each day.
  • Special evening activities:
    • Every evening (Monday-Thursday) features special activities such as a trip to the Mine Shaft for bowling and arcade games, lawn games at the East Houghton Waterfront Park, and a chairlift ride at Mont Ripley for a spectacular view of the Keweenaw Waterway. Please make sure you come prepared to be outdoors (athletic clothing/light jacket, as well as spending money for snacks and games)! Schedule/activities are subject to change.

Michigan Tech Sports Camps enforces an Authorization to Release policy for all hockey campers. Parents, guardians, and alternative authorized release persons will be the only ones allowed to sign a child out during camp, at the end of each day (commuter campers).

On-Ice Programs

Skaters will have three ice sessions per day (Monday - Thursday) in the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Each session has a different practice plan to ensure skill development in all facets of the game. Each day will conclude with an evening scrimmage to incorporate the skills learned in the earlier sessions. Full equipment required. Checking is not permitted.

Power Skating Instruction

Students participate in a daily program to maximize strength, speed, balance, agility, and proper mechanics to be an effective skater. Players strengthen their forward and backward strides and improve their stopping, turning, and crossover techniques. Drills help develop effective skating, with and without the puck. Goalies will be given the opportunity to work with a goalie coach on technique and position during this time.

Hockey Instruction

Players spend daily ice sessions in stations concentrating on individual skills, including passing, shooting, stick handling, and goaltending. All on-ice sessions include small-area games and drills designed to get players to compete and battle for the puck. Stickhandling drills emphasize decision-making—puck protection—as well as effective moves.

Performance Testing

Skaters will be timed on fastest lap, top speed, and agility to help players monitor their performance and set goals for improvement.

Evening Scrimmages and Final Game

Scrimmages are conducted Monday - Thursday evenings. A final game will be played on Friday. Coaches introductions, player announcements, and special recognition awards will be presented. A video board show with photos from the week will be on display for the duration.

Off-Ice Programs

Off-ice sessions will help work on the off-ice fundamentals that further help develop a successful hockey player. Sessions are daily and include, but are not limited to, stick handling, passing, shooting, classroom lectures, guest speakers, off-ice team building, and age-appropriate competitive games. Athletic clothing and tennis shoes are required.

Performance Testing

Individual testing is performed for upper and lower body strength, quickness, and agility to help players monitor their performance and set goals for improvement.

Classroom Sessions

Students will attend lectures with the opportunity to listen to and ask questions from special guest speakers. Past presentations included MTU head hockey coach Joe Shawhan and MTU head strength coach, Jordan Ferguson.

Hockey Basics

Off-ice stick handling, passing, shooting, and small area games in the Multipurpose Gym led by our staff.

Dryland & Age Appropriate Games

Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Skills Center features innovative field drills and exercises that reinforce on-ice techniques and increase players’ agility and stamina.

Outdoor Adventure Program

The Michigan Tech Outdoor Adventure (OAP) partners with Michigan Tech Sports Camps to strengthen the importance of team building through recreational activities such as:

  • High Ropes Course
  • Climbing Wall
  • Canoe Battleship
  • Log Rolling

Participant Meals and Snacks

In general, the residence hall cafeteria provides live-in participants breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. Commuter participants are provided lunch and dinner depending on the duration of camp. Please refer to individual camp schedules for differences in meal options and locations.

Special dietary needs and allergies will be asked for on the confirmation packet that participants receive after being accepted into camp. You can always call our office in advance to discuss your participant's situation, and we can put you in touch with our Dining Services Team for a proactive approach to ensure a great experience at our camp.

We encourage all participants to carry with them their own water bottles and snacks throughout the day. Hydration is very important! Residential participants should bring plenty of water, snacks, and spending money with them for the week. Vending machines are available but limited in the residence halls and food delivery might not be available.

Staying On Campus

2023 Live-In Participant Handbook (coming soon!)

Residence Hall

Live-in participants stay in Wadsworth Hall on Michigan Tech's campus, just a short walk from the Student Development Complex (SDC), where Michigan Tech Sports Camps are held. Rooms in the residence hall are furnished with bunk beds, dressers, and desks. Dorm rooms are not air-conditioned, so students are encouraged to bring a fan. Linens, pillows, and blankets are provided. Students must bring two to three towels. Restrooms and showers are conveniently located on each floor. The residence hall has lounges, cable TV, and a recreation room. Laundry facilities are available. Students must bring their own laundry supplies. Participants receive round-the-clock supervision. Note: Lost key $75.

Room Occupancy Policy

Participants living in the residence hall will room with members of their own age group. Rooms are equipped for two people. We do not take requests for 3-person rooms. Roommate requests must be made by both participants and will be asked for on the confirmation packets that participants receive after registration.

Participants not requesting a specific roommate will be paired up with another person in their age group. All roommate assignments are prepared ahead of time and do not happen at the time of check-in.

Prescription Medication

All students taking prescription medications are required to bring and turn in medication in single-dose packets that are pre-dosed for the correct time they are taken.  Please use an online pharmacy that provides pre-dosing, like PillPack by Amazon (a free service, you only pay your copays). These services can take 2 weeks to get your prescriptions set up so please plan. This does not include over-the-counter medications. If you have any medications that are not available for pre-dosing through an online pharmacy, please contact us so we can work out a plan with you.

We can provide many over-the-counter medications as needed, please do not send these with your child. In your confirmation paperwork, you will have the opportunity to authorize our staff to provide specific over-the-counter medications or not. In addition, we are happy to create an individual medication plan with you upon request.

Supervision and Campus Security

Counselors, residence hall coordinators, and head counselors supervise participants whenever they are not in their camp activity. We hire undergraduate mentors and include intensive training in safety, age-appropriate activities, and diversity.

Participants have constant supervision. They are not allowed to leave the designated campus area without accompaniment by a staff member.

Our campus is secure. While we rarely have problems, we recognize the value of keeping valuable possessions safe. A free "safe deposit" service where participants can store money and valuables such as extra cash, laptops, or other items. Valuable possessions are individually stored where the participant can access them at any time. The balance of stored cash is tracked, and participants must initial each withdrawal.

  • The residence halls are locked from 10 p.m.–6:30 a.m.
  • Individual rooms lock and participants are responsible for their own room keys. Summer Youth Athletics is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • No one is allowed on the SYA floors of the residence hall without a Summer Youth Athletics ID.
  • Michigan Tech is ranked as the safest college campus in the nation.
  • Campus is patrolled by full-time police officers.
