MacInnes Student Ice Arena will be Closed for Renovations in the Spring & Summer

John J MacInnes Student Ice Arena

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech’s John MacInnes Student Ice Arena will be closed this spring and summer for overdue facility maintenance. The renovation project will begin after spring commencement and will be completed in mid-August.

During the closure, crews will be replacing the air handling units which are original to the construction of the building in 1970.

The summer closure affects all activities in the ice arena, including hockey camp, figure skating camp, and ice rentals. Normal activities plan to resume in summer 2025.

The John MacInnes Ice Arena is home to Michigan Tech’s NCAA Division I hockey program. The facility is also used for recreational skating, youth, and adult hockey rentals, kinesiology and physiology classes, intramurals, and spring commencement. Construction on the arena began in 1970 and was opened for the 1971-72 hockey season. The building has received numerous renovations since its opening which include new seating and flooring in 2008, luxury suite additions in 2009, ice plant upgrade in 2012, and a new LED digital scoreboard in 2013.
