Great Northern Adventure Race (GNAR)

The Great Northern Adventure Race for 2023 has been cancelled.

The Great Northern Adventure Race (GNAR) is designed to be a competitive adventure race. This race is a great warm-up for veterans in the world of adventure races, as well as an excellent challenge for those seeking a tough race. The GNAR consists of mountain and road biking, land navigation, paddling, and traveling on foot, and amounts to about 40/50 miles of travel. There are also a number of challenges at popular locations in and around the city of Houghton. Boats and PFDs will be provided and transported by Michigan Tech. Bikes are not provided and must be brought to the Michigan Tech Trailhead on Sept. 22nd, by 6pm.

In teams of two you will have a chance to compete against other teams and the clock, while pushing yourself in new ways. Teams can be any combination of age, gender, and skill level, but it is recommended that all team members are in good physical condition, as the race is planned to last 6-9 hours. There will be a prize basket for each participant in the winning team, as well as chances to win other prizes sponsored by local shops within the race. Leg prizes and the final prize basket are sponsored by Downwind Sports, Station Street Discs, and the Copper Country Running Company. All participants will receive dinner after finishing the race, as well as a custom t-shirt for the event and a water bottle.

Participants are required to carry their phone on their person, as well as be entirely self-sufficient. Water will be provided at checkpoints, but no nutrition will be provided.
