Athletic Training Room

The Michigan Tech Athletic Training room services all varsity teams. It is located on the main floor in the hallway outside of the multipurpose room.

Challenge Course

The Michigan Tech Outdoor Adventure Program outdoor course is typically open from mid-May until the end of October.  We are able to run events on the High Elements during the winter months with advance reservations. We are not able to utilize many of our low elements during the winter due to snow cover, but we do have many games and portable elements that can be used year-round, at our location or we can come to you!

Classrooms

The SDC houses three classrooms and one open room that are used for classes, group meetings, training, and more. Classroom 121B, located on the west side of the Multipurpose Gym, is managed by the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology (KIP). Classrooms 237 and 238 are located on the second floor, south hallway. Room 237 contains tables and seating for 34 while room 238 contains tables and seating for 30. Both feature a projector/projection screen system with a computer. The Blueline Room, located in the John J MacInnes Student Ice Arena east of University Images is a large open space with moveable walls. Keep them open or close them for more privacy. Tables and chairs can be set up in different formations depending on the event. Available for rental; call 906-487-2578 for more information.

Climbing Wall

Our 40-foot climbing wall, located in the SDC Multipurpose Room, is a state-of-the-art textured plywood and metal superstructure meant to simulate varied-terrain rock climbing. The wall is maintained and supervised by the Outdoor Adventure Program. Use of the wall is limited to approved groups during approved times. These groups include academic classes, student organizations (ie the Ridge Roamers Climbing Club), and community classes as well as others.

Disc Golf Course

Michigan Tech’s 18-hole disc golf course is open to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Parking and entry to the course are accessible near Lot 21. It is a relatively short course with holes in the 200'-300' range, allowing you to show off your technical skills.

Fitness Center

The Michigan Tech Fitness Center is a modern workout facility with all of the amenities. This facility was remodeled in the summer of 2023 where almost all the machines were replaced with brand new modern equipment. Whether you’re seeking cardio, weights, or resistance, you’ll find the equipment you need: stair climbers, ellipticals, treadmills, rowing machines, weight machines, free weights, and more. The center also features flat-screen TVs, AppAudio, and air conditioning so your workouts aren’t just successful—they’re enjoyable, too! Complimentary mini lockers are available (ideal for ID's, wallets, phones, etc.). Fitness Center participants must be 16 years old.

Fitness Studio

Fitness Studio

With mirrored walls and a floor specially designed to provide greater resiliency, Michigan Tech’s Fitness Studio is used extensively by a variety of departments on campus. HuskiesFit Programs offers a wide range of regularly scheduled classes, from high-impact conditioning to low-impact yoga and everything in between. The Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology department holds a variety of dance and movement-based physical education classes in the space. The Studio is located on the second floor of the SDC. Gates Tennis Center

Michigan Tech’s Gates Tennis Center is the area’s premier indoor tennis facility. For beginners to pros and everyone in between, the Center has all of the top amenities, including:

  • Four professional-quality indoor courts, all recently resurfaced
  • Ball machine for practices and drills
  • Locker rooms with showers
  • A pro shop with staff capable of handling all of your equipment needs, restringing racquets, performing repairs, answering questions, and more

Ice Arena

The John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena, with a seating capacity of 4,200 and fourteen rentable luxury suites/skyboxes, is home to Michigan Tech's NCAA Division I hockey team. It was voted the #2 best hockey arena experience in Michigan in 2012 by Stadium Journey magazine. In addition to varsity hockey, the arena is used for Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology classes, intramural hockey, recreational skating, youth and adult hockey, figure skating programs, private rentals, and special events. Available for rental; call 906-487-2578 for more information.

Locker Rooms

Locker room facilities are available at the SDC and Gates Tennis Center. Both men’s and women’s locker rooms are accessible to access holders and students as well as the SDC’s Access Holder locker rooms and gender-neutral locker room. Lockers are available for rent at both locations.

Multipurpose Room

The Multipurpose Room is your place for indoor basketball, volleyball, badminton, and walking/running. The space features a hardwood floor with space for four courts and synthetic flooring covering a regulation-shaped, five-lane, 200-meter track. View floor plan. Available for rental. Outdoor Softball Fields & Sand Volleyball Court

Michigan Tech’s outdoor softball fields, located adjacent to the SDC, are available to players and groups on a first-come, first-served basis. Sand volleyball courts are available for a variety of recreational activities—open play, intramural tournaments, sand volleyball twos, and sand volleyball fours. Available for rental; call 906-487-2578 for more information.

Peter J. Grant Hockey Education Center

The Peter J. Grant Hockey Education Center is the exclusive facility for Michigan Tech's Division I varsity hockey team. Opened in 1999, it features a training area, modern lockers and sauna, a state-of-the-art sound and video communication system, a 1,500-square-foot weight training facility, and more. For information, contact 906-487-2104.

Racquetball Courts

Michigan Tech has four courts designed specifically for racquetball and wallyball. Located on the first floor of the SDC, courts can be reserved by the hour by calling 906-487-2761. An SDC membership or Michigan Tech student ID is required for all players. Registered student organizations can reserve courts for the entire semester by calling 906-487-2578.

Sherman Field & Hubbell Field

“Go Huskies!” It’s a call you’ll hear shouted loudly and often at Michigan Tech’s Sherman Field, home playing field for the GLIAC award-winning men's varsity football and women's varsity soccer teams. The field, which was returfed in 2011, is also used for Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology classes, intramural games, student organizations, and more.

Shooting Range

Located in the lowest level of the SDC, the shooting range is home to several student clubs, PE classes, community programs, and public access. Having undergone a major renovation in 2018, Michigan Tech would like to thank the following groups for their support of the project: Wildlife and Sport Fisheries Restoration Project, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources. 

Skate Rental Center

Located on the ice level in the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena, the Skate Rental Center has a full inventory of skates and helmets in youth and adult sizes.

 

  

Soccer Fields (Upper/Lower)

Hubbell Field and the upper and lower soccer fields (the two grass playing fields located next to the SDC) are spaces specially made for football and soccer play. Hubbell Field is primarily used by the Michigan Tech varsity men’s football and women’s soccer teams. Available for rental; call 906-487-2578 for more information.

Suite/Skybox

The addition of 10 suites inside the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in 2009 was the latest in a series of state-of-the-art renovations to the arena. Each suite is equipped with inside and balcony seating, a wet bar, a refrigerator, and a flat-screen TV with both cable and an in-house feed of the game. Complete food service from Michigan Tech Catering Services is available for each suite. Season-long and single-game suites are both available to Michigan Tech Hockey fans.

Swimming Pool

Jump into the water to perfect your backstroke, swim for fitness—or just splash around and cool off. Michigan Tech’s eight-lane, 25-yard pool provides opportunities for lap, recreational, and open swimming. A separate diving well has two one-meter diving boards and a five-meter platform. Community swim lessons and aqua-fit aerobics classes are available. Complimentary mini lockers are available (ideal for IDs, wallets, phones, etc.).  Available for rental. Group rates are available. Tech Trails

Michigan Tech's trail system is located right across the street from the Student Development Complex, on the south end of the Michigan Tech campus on MacInnes Drive. The 35 kilometers of trails are nationally recognized for quality, variety of terrain, and maintenance. With Houghton’s average snowfall approaching 250 inches, the season usually opens in early December and continues into April. Grooming takes place daily and the system includes 7.5 kilometers of lighted trails, making an after-class ski trip convenient for students.

Varsity Gym (Wood Gym)

Michigan Tech's Varsity Gym—often referred to as the Wood Gym—is the home for the highly successful Huskies men's and women's basketball teams and women's volleyball team. The facility features motorized retractable bleachers and armchair seating on one side of the court, with a total seating capacity of 3,200. Available for rental; call 906-487-2578 for more information.
